Frankenhaus German Shepherds

introduction

Our goal at Frankenhaus is to produce the best examples of the German Shepherd Dog possible, true to the AKC Standard in both conformation and temperament. Total dogs, sound of mind and body, capable of the herding tasks for which they were originally bred, as well as the multitude of additional tasks for which they have been adapted... trusting and trustworthy companions, loyal to and ready to defend their masters, as well as functional and beautiful animals.

"Gunner" is a dog we placed as an adult. We just received this photo and note from his new family. "Mitchell earned several ribbons in 4-H Junior Dog Care with Gunner this past season. They got 2nd at our Fun Match, 5th at our County Fair, and 1st at the State Fair! (We would have called, but Dog Care isn’t terribly exciting to watch – it’s just an interview!) Mitchell and Hannah each placed 1st in their divisions in skillathon at the state fair. Skillathon tests the child’s knowledge of dogs, including breeds, internal & external parasites, grooming tools and parts of the dog. So, Gunner is in good hands! Since this was their first year together, and Gunner still out weighs Mitch by about 10 pounds, Mitch chose only to do Dog Care this year. He may take on Showmanship next year." - Laura Turpin

why the german shepherd dog?

We have always felt that the German Shepherd Dog is the only "real" dog. Other breeds are poor imitations. This is an emotional conclusion, not a logical one. It doesn't really matter that the GSD is a relatively young breed. What matters is that the characteristics that were selected in the creation of the breed were the "right" ones. The German Shepherd is arguably the most versatile of breeds (filling many roles in society with equal skill and grace). It is a natural breed, requiring no special attention to look like a German Shepherd. Combine these things with the beauty and excitement of the "flying trot", the German Shepherd moving the way it would patrolling the boundary and herding sheep in the tending style, and you might begin to understand our enthusiasm for the breed.

gait animation

Here is a little animation I am working on of a gaiting German Shepherd. These are just the first sketches, and still need cleaned up quite a bit and detail added. Front and rear extension are not quite what I want yet, but I thought it was interesting anyway.

affiliations

We are active members of the German Shepherd Dog Club of America, signers of the GSDCA Breeders Code, and officers of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Central Ohio.

"Sony" CH, TC, HIC, OFA - the foundation that brought us back into the show world after many years away while our children were young. She was our first champion, did everything we ever asked of her, and runs the house as the resident "couch potato" as she approaches her 12th birthday. She is shown here placing 3rd in the Intermediate Bitch Class at the Great Lakes Futurity in 1996, handled by Terry Hower. This was our first Futurity placing.
